Radiotelevisão Portuguesa...The Treasure Island

RealPlayer is required to see the videos which I'm gonna tell you

Last updated: 20/11/2000jump to what's new!

The web site of the major broadcast station in Portugal, RTP, may be regarded as a treasure island on the web...
In "Vídeo na Internet" section, there are tons of video archives: For example, last year "Desporto" (=sports) section had 18 videos of EURO2000 special which seemed to have been aired on Portuguese TV originally, since 14/06/2000 until 02/07/2000. (Unfortunately, now they are no longer available on the net. )
Also, on the archives section, it can be searched some sport news featuring him.
To see those videos, RealPlayer is required.
Note: It is impossible to save the videos into your hard disk drive due to Realserver security system, unless you are a hacker... Just see them every time you're online ;) .

The followings are the direct links toward the videos or sounds I've ever accessed so far and found quite intriguing (warning: I am putting these links and making the sound files without permission).
Some of them include interviews with Vítor: I've been told that his gentleness and decency as a real sportsman impress not only his fans but also the journalists, and now I find it quite convincing with these videos. Perhaps they are must-see archives for his fans, I guess.

Archives

We can search something about him from RTP's video archives with "pesquisa" (=search) utility.
Search Tips: The combination of some keywords is very critical to find what you seek out: Type the keyword as futebol for all the news related to football and hit "pesquiar". If you'd like to search something about FC Porto, type futebol&porto (use "&" to combinate some keywords). If you prefer seeking out something about Portuguese national team, type nacional. Meanwhile, inputting Baía along with Porto hits a few things, although not all videos include his interview.
Here I'm putting bluntly the links to 5 videos of the archives which I've ever found so far. Again I'd appreciate if you find anything else and notify me it...

  1. It should not have happened... (17/11/2000)
The thing which we never wanted happened... He was injured his right knee again. Although he was almost ready to play for FC Porto, now it went backward... Surprisingly, just after the incident the press got an interview with him. I wonder if Porto had invited them to demonstrate his being up to play soon... If so, it resulted quite ironically. Also, I was so surprised to see him not refusing to be interviewed despite that he must have been so depressed at that time. Or is it a routine work for football players no matter how difficult situation they are under? I believe he'll come back one day! Later, it was decided that he undergo a surgery again, on 25/11/00. It is also reported he will be unavailable for 4 months at least.
  2. Visiting the national squad to encourage (05/10/2000)
Originally aired on October 6th. Since the signing with FC Porto was so delayed that he is yet to recoup his form and was not convoked to the Portuguese national team for World Cup 2002 qualifying matches against Ireland (07/10) and Netherlands (11/10). However, as the national team's captain and a tower of mental strength, he visited the squad on 05/10 to encourage them and was reportedly received warmly by his colleagues and the director A. Oliveira. In usual situation I think it's very strange that the press tries to have an interview with a player who is unable to participate the tournaments, but here is an exception: He is Vítor Baía. ...This clip also includes interviews with the director Oliveira and Luis Figo.
  3. The day signing with FC Porto (15/09/2000)
Finally this news is now available at RTP's archives page. Unfortunately the sound at the presentation is so poor on this video that I hardly hear what they were talking about (but I guess the reason why the press laughed so much at Pinto Da Costa's speech was because he said "It is a presentation of his signing with Naples, oh no, with Porto, definitely" or something, with kidding very much...) I was also surprised VB was so calm at the press conference... I'd thought there had been much more euphoric atmosphere around them... Anyway he returned to Porto and did a hair cut a bit :)
  4. The day before the match Portugal v. Hungary (for EURO2000 qualification)
It seems to have been aired on October 8th, 1999 originally (if so, it's just a week before his 30th birthday). Again I stole the sound track from the original video of RTP illegally...
  5. The day before the match FC Porto v. Real Madrid at Antas (Champions League)
It seems to have been aired on 19/10/1999 originally. A month before, FC Porto and VB suffered defeat by Real Madrid for 1-3 at Madrid's home stadium Santiago Bernabéu, so this upcoming game at Porto's home stadium was expected to be a return match. As a result, Porto and VB eventually beat Madrid by the score 2-1. However, he was reportedly beginning to have problem with his right knee since the last game at Santiago Bernabéu. Who could anticipate he would have to undergo two or more surgeries for his knee later....

EURO2000 Special

There used to be EURO 2000 Special video archives on RTP's site, but now they've gone :((.... Please put up with the following sound files I took from those videos... I wish I could copy the videos from the server, but they were protected by RealNetworks server system... After all it is not my intention to "steal" them...Since my connection to RTP's server, which must be in Portugal, is so slow and far that I often lose the contact while attempting to access the videos. As a result, I could not complete to see all of them. If you have an opportunity to watch those videos, I'd be happy if you refer to the following highlight "what's to see" in advance.

  1. 16/06/2000 (perhaps originally aired on June 16th, 2000)
The day before the match against Romania (Group A tournament).
What's to see: Vítor Baía at press conference for domestic media, divided in three parts. In addition, there was an interview with Paulo Sousa later.
Note: Since I can't hear Portuguese, I'm sorry I can't provide perfect transcriptions here: If you know Portuguese and voluntarily offer me transcriptions, I'd really appreciate you. You may transcribe in any of these 4 languages : Portuguese (I would manage to translate it in English with some translation utility on the web) , Spanish (I understand a little), and of course in English or in Japanese (I'm a Japanese actually). The following are the soundtracks what I shamelessly took from the original video to make it easier to hear him repeatedly...Totally unauthorized by RTP...
  2. 17/06/2000 Group A Tournament - Romania 0-1 Portugal
The day when the Portugal team won against Romania. It seems that RTP had interviews just after the tournament and many Portuguese stars appear one after another: Mr. Cohelho, Costinha, Rui Costa, Vítor Baía (aprox time index: 12'47''), Sá Pinto, F.Couto, Secretario, João Pinto, Sergío Conceição, Abel Xavier.... Since these interviews are not at press conference, we can see them closer: The way of VB's talking with restrained smile would appeal to you so much.
  3. 24/06/2000 Quarter Final - Turquia 0-2 Portugal
The day when they won against Turquia. Although there's no interview with VB, we can review almost the entire game, including the lucky penalty scene repeatedly. In addition, Figo's and Nuno Gomes' interviews are featured (Actually Nuno's interviews can be seen much more on other days).
What's to see: VB's big roar and great smile. :)
  4. 25/06/2000 The day after the quarter final Thanks to Jan for the information.
What's to see: An interview with VB (Time index: aprox 19'30"). In this clip we can see him smiling so closley, it's quite adorable.:) In case you're curious, there's also an interview with Nuno Gomes before VB's.
  5. 28/06/2000 Semi Final - France 2-1 Portugal
The day when they lost to France eventually. There's no interview with the team, but we can review almost entire game including the fatal penalty. Don't miss the last 4 minutes of the show; A well-edited highlights can be seen along with the background aria "Nessun Dorma", from Puccini's opera "Turandot". "Nessun Dorma" means "None must sleep" in Italian. Actually while the game was going on, it was around 03:30-06:00 AM in Japan and I kept awake to watch TV. Even after the game finished, I was so sad that I forgot to sleep eventually...
