The author has been in and out of the operating rooms, wards and clinics of hospitals large and small, rural and urban, during the past two decades. He has been in solo private practice, has worked for an HMO as their employee, and has logged several thousand surgical procedures. Through these pages we try to help patients and their families better understand the art and science of surgery.
The field of Surgery, or General Surgery, is defined by the American Board of Surgery. Their pronouncements, made in consultation with the American Board of Medical Specialties, define both the scope of practice and the requisite qualifications of surgeons.
