Airfix Picture Gallery
| Update December 2001 - this section is being
discontinued. There are 100's of Airfix
kit
pictures (and other art-work) now available
on CD-ROM with my Collectors Guide. Click here for Collectors Guide ordering information. |
Over the last year I have received many
requests to add Airfix box-top art-work to
this web site.
It's a great idea, but a huge amount of work
considering all the
hundreds Airfix kits and all the different
box types that were produced.
However, Airfix artwork is almost classic.
Plastic bag header cards
have been collectable and marketable items
for quite some time, but at recent Toy Fairs
I have seen traders selling empty Airfix
boxes. Most people agree that the artwork
of
Roy Cross symbolises Airfix at its best -
hence the request for access to that nostalgia.
There are, unfortunately, a number of practical
problems to be overcome in setting up an
Airfix Picture Gallery -
- Great artwork requires great imagery. And
for PCs that means good digital pictures,
which in turn means large file sizes. Large
files take a long time to download.
- I simply don't have enough kits to create
this Gallery from my own resources.
- This web-site runs on a free ISP service,
and I've almost used up my disk allocation!
So here's the solution (with reference to
the above problems):
- I'll create a Gallery, tell you where to
find it, and allow you to download pictures
at your
leisure. It will not be part of this site.
This page will simply be a Contents and Index.
- You'll supply the pictures! Over 25% of the
pictures on this site were provided by other
people, and
I've tried to give acknowledgements where
I can. Send me good quality images
of "classic" artwork and I'll add them to
the Gallery. (by "classic" I'm meaning specials,
originals, Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Roy Cross
and anything else I define as classic!)
- I'll use another web space where disk space
is available.
But as this will still be limited, I'll have
to "rotate" the pictures, with only a subset
available at any time. I will not normally
repeat imagery that is already on the web
site in a smaller format,
unless the full-size original is something
special!
Here's how it works -
The gallery is located at members.lycos.co.uk/djairfix/dbjames/images/
This page will tell you what pictures exist,
and what their sizes are. OK?
