Jonathan and Stella Scott's home page

(not forgetting Jenny and Colin too)

[The Scott family, 8th July 2001]

Hello!

We live in Chandler's Ford, near Winchester, England. Jonathan works for IBM at Hursley, but our family life revolves mostly around playing music in local orchestras (and in string quartets when we get the chance) and of course around our children Jenny, born in January 1997, and Colin, born in February 2001.

We play mostly in the Havant Symphony Orchestra and Havant Chamber Orchestra, which are both part of the Havant and District Orchestral Society (HADOS). You can find more information about them including our current programme of concerts by following this link the Havant Orchestras web site within Hampshire County Council's HantsWeb information network.

Jonathan usually plays the violin, viola or piano and Stella plays the 'cello. On those instruments, we can manage quite a few concertos between us. However, at home we have quite a collection of additional musical instruments. Jonathan also plays flute and 'cello, Stella plays piano and clarinet, and Jenny plays triangle, castanets and anything else that makes a sufficiently satisfying noise when you thump, shake or blow it (where her choice of technique is not necessarily the conventional one)! Oh, and we have a couple of recorders, pan pipes and an ocarina, not to mention a couple of conductor's batons (one for Jonathan and one for Jenny).

For our summer holidays, we used to go on string quartet courses (which is how we met). We had our own quartet for a while, but at present we are currently looking for a new violinist, at least around grade VIII Associated Board, free on occasional Sunday afternoons, in the Winchester or Southampton area, and willing to try anything from Haydn to Debussy (but especially Borodin's first and second quartets).

We've got music notation and playback software (Sibelius and Musicator Win) on our home computer, which is very much easier and smarter than writing things out on manuscript paper, but although our MIDI card can make hundreds of different "beep" noises claiming to be everything from a grand piano to a telephone, there's no danger of them being mistaken for the real thing.

Jonathan's work involves accessing the web from IBM mainframes running VM/CMS, and in his "spare time" he has helped develop the Charlotte/2.1.0 WWW browser (a text-only browser for IBM 3270 terminals), and a VM/CMS web server program (called DOCTOPIC) to enable Bookmanager books (such as IBM reference manuals) to be viewed from web browsers. Both of these are available free from the IBM VM download library.

Jonathan is also interested in theoretical physics (including relativity and the Dirac wave equation), so here are some links to his physics ideas and theories, as well as to general physics resources.
