Maps of Atlantic Canada
(Moll.) A Description of the Bay of Fundy...observed by Nat. Blackmore in ye Years 1711 and 1712 By Her Majesties Special Command. 1732. London. 8 1/4 x 17 1/4." Occasional light soiling; image area close at top margin; map has completely separated at a vertical fold and has been repaired with archival tape.
Attractive outline color contributes to the charm of this map, which covers part of the coasts of Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Identified on the Maine coast are Mount Desart Rock, Great Manan I., Machias and the mouth of the St. Croix River. A notation indicates "Mount Desart seen 15 leagues off in very clear weather." An inset shows The Harbour of Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia. A scarce map. [Item No. 2031.] $450.00.(London Magazine.) A Map of Royal or Cape Breton I. from the Best Authorities By Thos. Kitchin Geog. 1747. From the July, 1747 issue of London Magazine. (London.) 6 3/8 x 4 1/8." Uniformly age-toned. A very good example.
A wonderfully detailed small map of Cape Breton Island from 1747. Numerous islands, bays and harbors are identified. A charming vignette of fishing activity decorates most of the bottom one-third of the image area. Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 24. [Item no. 2200.] $150.00(London Magazine.) Nova Scotia Drawn from Surveys by T Kitchin Gr. 1749. From the April, 1749 issue of London Magazine. London. 4 3/8 x 6 5/8." A very good example; uniformly age-toned.
A wonderful map of Nova Scotia dated 1749. Numerous towns, bays and capes are identified, as are "The Fishing Banks of Nova Scotia." A decorative cartouche in the lower right corner depicts lumbering and fishing activity. Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 35. [Item no. 2203.] SOLD.(Bellin.) Carte de L'Accadie et Pais Voisins. 1757. From L'Histoire Generale des Voyages. (Paris.) 8 5/8 x 13." Folded as issued. Some light offsetting. A fine, dark impression. Very good.
A delightful map of Acadia from the middle of the 18th century. The map includes Nova Scotia ("Acadie"), Cape Breton ("Isle Royale"), Prince Edward Island ("Isle Saint Jean"), and part of New Brunswick. Much detail of capes, bays, rivers, towns and forts is provided. A notation in the sea south of Nova Scotia attests to the fishing being "tres bonne." [Item no. 2229.] $300.00(Des Barres.) [Chart of Maine/New Brunswick Coast: Grand Manan Island, Passamaquoddy Bay & River.] 1778. London. Four sheets, joined: 66 x 48.5." Staining, especially lower right quadrant. Some chipping and raggedness at edges as paper has become somewhat brittle. One tear of 3" into image area at top right.
This appears to be the first state of this very large, perhaps even cumbersome, chart of Passamaquoddy Bay. It is comprised of four sheets that have been joined to form a complete chart. Stevens notes that it usually occurs in two sections of two sheets each. Stevens further notes that the copper plates were cut down by 2 3/4" each for the second and subsequent states of the chart. The chart identifies Bayles Mistake, Little River, Cobscook Bay, the St. Croix River, Moose Island, Grand Bay of Pasamaquody (sic), Grand Manan Island and Campo Bello Island. The chart bears the date January 27, 1778. A rarely offered chart. Stevens Collection of the Atlantic Neptune: 115 & 116. [Item No. 2036.] SOLD.(Zatta.) L'Acadia, le Province di Sagagahook e Main, la Nuova Hampshire, la Rhode Island, e Parte di Massachusset e Connecticut. From Antonio Zatta's Atlante Novissimo. (Venice.) 1778. 13 x 16 3/4." Outline color; light centerfold staining. A better than average example.
An attractive Italian mapping of all of Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, as well as portions of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It is based on John Mitchell's large-scale, multi-sheet map of North America of 1755. The map was published during the American Revolution, and a note off the coast of Maine refers to the burning of Falmouth (Maine) by the British in October, 1775 -- an interesting example of a map being a purveyor of history as well as geography. McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps, 1513-1800: 778.8. [Item # 2252.] $650.00.(Early Magazine with Nova Scotia Map.) The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure, Vol LXVIII for 1781. By John Hinton, at the King's Arms in Paternoster Row. London. 1781.. 378, (4). One quarter leather over marbled boards. Spine is worn and abraded, especially at top and bottom. Marbled boards scuffed. Contents very good with only occasional traces of foxing. This volume includes the January through June, 1781 issues of The Universal Magazine plus a supplement. Included are two outstanding maps, An Accurate Map of New Hampshire in New England from a late Survey (12 5/8 x 11") and A New and Accurate Map of the Province of Nova Scotia in North America from the latest Observations (11 1/8 x 13"). Both maps remain bound in the volume and have light offsetting. The map of New Hampshire actually includes the present-day State of Maine as part of the "Province of New Hampshire." A narrative description accompanies each map. In addition, there is a full-page engraving of "George Washington, Commander in Chief of the American Army." A four-page "Succinct Account of the Life and Voyages of Captain James Cook" is accompanied by a fold-out engraving entitled "Representation of the Death of Captain Cook." All in all, a rich source of history as it was occuring in 1781. Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: New Hampshire - 374, Nova Scotia - 375. [Item # 2240.] SOLD.(Doolittle.) A Map of the District of Maine with New Brunswick & Nova Scotia. 1796. From: Morse's The American Universal Geography. Boston. 7 x 9 1/8." Later, attractive hand color. A good clean copy except for an ink smudge in the lower left corner (outside the plate mark) and some very minor staining in the right margin (again, outside the plate mark).
This five-county map of the District of Maine includes New Bruswick, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. Moosehead Lake is shown as "Mose Head Lake" and a huge Scoodic Lake appears in the center of the District. The northern boundary extends considerably above that ultimately agreed to by the Treaty of Washington. Wheat & Brun 175. Click here for image. [Item No. 2087.] $325.00.
