Maps of Delaware

Mason & Dixon at Work

[Mason-Dixon Line.]   Gentleman's Magazine.    A Map of that Part of America where a Degree of Latitude was Measured for the Royal Society: By Cha. Mason, & Jere. Dixon.   Published in the December, 1769 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine.   London.   6 5/8 x 4."   Light offsetting from facing page, most prominent in upper margin.  Otherwise very good.
A small, contemporary map related to one of the most famous surveys in America.  The map portrays Delaware and adjacent areas of Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey.  Mason and Dixon began the survey of the Maryland/Pennsylvania border in April, 1765 to resolve a long-standing dispute between the two colonies.  They also made the first measurement of a degree of latitude in North America, which is the subject of this map. This map is a slight variant of one which appeared a year earlier in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.  Although the map is dated "Gent Mag. Nov. 1769" above the upper neat line, it is listed in the contents of the December, 1769 issue.   Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 244.  Phillips cites only the Royal Society version of the map at pp. 393 & 674.    [Item no. 3077.]   $600.00.

Universal Magazine.  A New Map of the Province of Maryland in North America.   1780.   From the Universal Magazine, February, 1780.   (London.)   11 x 13."   Folded as issued.  Light offsetting.  Minor repairs at left binding margin, just extending to the neat line.  Overall, a sound and attractive example.
A good presentation of Maryland and Delaware during the American Revolution.  Nice town and river detail.  Many roads are depicted, including "Indian Road to Virginia" and "Great Waggon Road to Philadelphia."  "The Blue Ridge of Mountains" is shown, as is "Lord Fairfax's Boundary Line," that defines part of the boundary with Virginia; the balance of the Maryland-Virginia boundary is not specified.  Delaware is designated as "Part of the Jerseys."  Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 350.   Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies, 1750-1789: 1412.   [Item No. 2163.]   SOLD.

(U.S. Coast Survey.)   Sea Coast of Delaware Maryland and Part of Virginia...   1852.   U.S. Coast Survey.    27 1/2 x 19 1/4."    Very clean folded chart with none of the usual foxing.  Small separations at two fold intersections.
A nicely detailed chart of the coast from Cape May in the north to Assawoman Island in the south.  Numerous shoals, islands and other features are identified.  "Mason's and Dixon's Line" is shown.  Hundreds of soundings are provided as are extensive notes on nautical dangers.    [Item No. 2168.]   $125.00.
