Maps of Louisiana

(London Magazine.)   A New Map of the River Mississippi from the Sea to Bayagoulas.   1761.   From the London Magazine.   London.   7 1/4 x 9 1/2."   Uniformly and lightly age-toned, folded as issued.  Two very minor fold separations in top margin.  A fairly detailed portrayal of the mouth of the Mississippi River, extending north as far as Lake Pontchartrain.  New Orleans is located as are numerous islands, rivers and other geographical features.  Includes several historical and/or descriptive notations, such as: "Forest of Holms Fit for Ship Building."  Likely derived from Thomas Jeffery's 1759 map of New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi River.  (See  Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies, 1750-1789: 1677.)   Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 179.   [Item No. 2157.]   $425.00.

A very attractive map of New Orleans showing the layout of city blocks, street names (including Rue de Bourbon), parish church, ship anchorages, etc.  The map has its origins in a plan of the city prepared by Le Blond de la Tour in the first quarter of the 18th century.  Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 180.   Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies, 1750-1789: 1679.   [Item No. 2156.]   $450.00.

(Sartine/Depot General de la Marine.)   Carte d'une Partie des Cotes de la Floride et de la Louisiane, Contenant le Cours du Mississipi...1778.   1778.   Depot Generale de la Marine.   (Paris.)   Image: 15 1/4 x 22 3/4."  Sheet size: 19 3/8 x 26 1/4."   A sharp, bright, unblemished example.
An elegant French rendering of part of the Gulf Coast, dated 1778 and published for the Neptune Americo-Septentrional.  The chart covers the area between St. Joseph Bay and Vermilion Bay.  Numerous rivers, bays, islands and lakes are identified, as are the towns/forts of Pensacola, Mobile, Biloxi and New Orleans.  A few historical notes are included, such as "F. Crevecoeur Abandonne par les Francois en 1718."  Rhumb lines and coastal soundings further graphically enhance a very attractive chart.   Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies, 1750-1789: 1611.    [Item no. 2272.]     $2,500.00

Approximately 25" of this long chart provides detail of the southern shore of Lake Pontchatrain.  Current and proposed railroad lines are indicated, as are Bayou St. John, New Canal and Milneburgh.  The chart portrays the design of the breakwater proposed to provide safe anchorage at the termini of the railroads.  The final 8" of the chart provides design details of the proposed breakwater.    [Item No. 2136.]   $75.00.
