Maps of the Mid Atlantic
(Depot de la Marine.) Carte de la Cote Orientale de L'Amerique Septentrionale Partie Comprise Entre New York et la Riviere Saint Jean...en 1834. 1834. Depot de la Marine. (Paris.) 23 1/2 x 34 1/2." Rolled chart, never folded. Crisp impression on heavy stock. Very clean with no foxing. A beautiful example.
This chart, based on an 1828 chart by Edmund Blunt, provides good coastal detail from Long Island to Georgia. It is enhanced by two large insets at the left: the entrance to the Hudson River (about 14 3/4 x 11 1/4") and the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay (about 7 1/4 x 10"). Both of the insets are also attributed to earlier Blunt charts. A very attractive chart in superb condition. [Item no. 2224.] $600.00(Blunt.) The Coast of the United States. Sheet No. 1. From Point Judith to Cape Lookout from the U.S. Coast Surveys. 1865. E. & G.W. Blunt. 1854, with additions to 1865. New York. 46 x 31." Rolled bluebacked chart with two horizontal crease lines and minor edge chipping. Light water staining to bottom 7" of chart. Moderate soiling to 7" x 5" area at top left; area is blank except for latitude and longitude scales. Heavy soiling (soot ?) to 7" x 2" area at top right. All things considered, a very good example of what was obviously a working chart.
A classic Blunt blueback of the mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S, covering the area from Newport, RI to Cape Lookout, NC. Lighthouses are highlighted in red and yellow. Areas charted include Long Island Sound, Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, Potomac River (to Washington), James River, Albemarle Sound, Cape Hatteras and Pamplico Sound. Apparently a late-breaking addition in 1865 was a small paste-on, noting "1865, The Light Ship on the tail of the Horse Shoe was removed when Cape Henry light was re-lighted." The label of the seller of the chart remains affixed to the reverse: " D. Eggert & Son, Manufacturers and importers of Chronometers, Fine Watches, Nautical Instruments, Charts, Books &c., 239 Pearl Street, New York." [Item no. 2186.] $675.00
