Maps of North America

(California as an Island)   (Fer, Nicolas de.)   Amerique Septentrionale Par N. de Fer.   Likely 1700 or after.   Possibly Paris.   From Jacques Robbe’s Methode pour Apprendre Facilement la Geographie.  5 1/4 x 6 3/8."   Age toned with light soiling; a bit of margin roughness; remargining of both lower corners outside image area.
A wonderful small map of North America, showing California as an island and labeled as such.  Much of the middle of the present-day U.S. is labeled "Floride," while the West is styled "Noveau Mexique."  Two natives support the cartouche in the upper left corner of the map. McLaughlin,The Mapping of California as an Island: 100.    [Item No. 2023.]   $575.00.

(Bowen.)   An Accurate Map of North America, Drawn from the Best Modern Maps and Charts and regulated by Astron'l Observatns.  By Eman. Bowen Geogr. to his Majesty 1747.   1747.   (London.)   6.0 x 8.0."   A very clean example with attractive later color.  Archivally matted.  Very good.
While focusing on North America, this small map also encompasses the North Atlantic Ocean and much of the coast of Europe.   Bermuda is described as Bermudas or Sommers Islds, and there is good detail of the Bahamas and Caribbean islands.  The British colonies and major coastal cities are named; New France and Louisiana occupy much of the middle of North America.  The northwestern section of the continent is labeled "Parts Undiscovered."   On the west coast, "The Supposed Str. of Annian" appears. (Annian was an early European name for Alaska.)   Just below it is New Albion and California.  A nice depiction of colonial North America in the middle of the 18th century.    [Item No. 2100.]   $350.00.

(Gentleman's Magazine.)   [Louisiana, Virginia, Carolina.]   1763.   From the June, 1763 Gentleman's Magazine.   (London.)   7 1/8 x 9.5."   Age toned, but a sharp impression.  Half-inch tears in right and bottom margins just touch neat line; left margin raggedness outside of plate mark; mounting tape remnant on reverse at top.  Overall, a very good copy.
This untitled map from the Gentleman's Magazine depicts most of the present-day United States except for the West Coast and New England.  It was likely included in the magazine to acquaint the readers with the areas in dispute during the French and Indian War.  A line that follows the "Apalachean" and "Allegany" Mountains is labeled: "Formerly the French claim'd all ye Country Westward of this Line."  Many Indian tribes are located in the Midwest and West, the entirety of which is identified as "Louisiana."   Various mines are located, including those for gold, silver, lead and salt.  This was an early portrayal of the western part of America appearing in a popular publication.    Jolly,  Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 220.    [Item No. 2085.]   $425.00.
