This map, as well as the virtually identical Blaeu map that first appeared ca. 1638, are based upon the Mercator/Hondius map of the same area from 1606. Both the Blaeu and Jansson maps made additions to the Mercator/Hondius mapping, making these the most accurate maps of the Southeast yet to appear. Among the improvements are a much more accurate portrayal of Chesapeake Bay and the apparent first appearence of Newport News ("Newport nesa") on a printed map.
