Maps of North Carolina
(Jansson.) Virginiae partis australis, et Floride partis orientalis, interjacentiumq3 regionum Nova Descriptio. Amsterdam. 1639 or later. 15 1/4 x 19 3/4." Outline color with colored cartouche and scale. Fully remargined. Minor discoloration, primarily confined to top margin. Overall, an attractive example. This map, as well as the virtually identical Blaeu map that first appeared ca. 1638, are based upon the Mercator/Hondius map of the same area from 1606. Both the Blaeu and Jansson maps made additions to the Mercator/Hondius mapping, making these the most accurate maps of the Southeast yet to appear. Among the improvements are a much more accurate portrayal of Chesapeake Bay and the apparent first appearence of Newport News ("Newport nesa") on a printed map. Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps: 42. Burden, The Mapping of North America: 254. [Item # 2286.] $1,750.00.(Map: North Carolina -- Carey.) The State of North Carolina from the best Authorities, &c. by Samuel Lewis. Published by Mathew Carey. (Philadelphia.) (1795.) 11 x 18.5." A crisp impression of a map that has been professionally cleaned and restored: laid down on archival paper with old tears expertly mended.
The first map of the state of North Carolina published in the United States. The map presents considerable detail of towns, counties (named but without boundaries), roads, rivers and coastal features. Several swamps are identified including "Great Alligator dismal Swamp." "The Swash way" is shown along the northern part of the South Carolina coast. Wheat & Brun, Maps and Charts Published in America before 1800: 581. [Item # 2285.] $675.00.
