Maps of New Hampshire

(Des Barres.)   [Piscataqua Harbour -- Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME]   1779.   Publish'd according to Act of Parliament, 1st January,  1779 by J.F.W. Des Barres, Esqr.   London.   Image size:  41 1/2 x 29 3/4."  Paper size:  43 3/4 x 30 7/8."   A strong impression.  Several paper repairs, primarily in the margins, do not detract from this very attractive chart.  There is occasional very light staining.
Des Barres' monumental Atlantic Neptune was one of the great achievements of 18th century cartography.  This chart of the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area provides incredible detail from Godfry's Ledge (south of Portsmouth) to York Harbour (Maine).  The chart consists of two unjoined sections, each of which is comprised of two joined sheets.   With a scale of about 1" = 1/3 mile, the chart identifies individual dwellings and lots, as well as roads and coastal features (ledges, points, islands).   Soundings are provided for Portsmouth Harbor and Fort William and Mary is located.  The chart is uncolored and bears the J Bates/JB watermarks.  Cobb, Maps of  New Hampshire to 1900:  52.  Stevens 106.    [Item No. 2081.]   SOLD.

(Des Barres.)  [Chart of the Coast from Newbury to Cape Elizabeth.] Published according to Act, April 29, 1776 by I.F.W. Des Barres, Esqr. London.  1776/1781.  Image size: 29 1/2 x 41 1/2."  Overall size: 32 1/2 x 44."  Moderate stain along center fold where the two sheets were joined.  Other light to moderate staining, primarily confined to the margins.  Several old tears have been repaired, including one of about 12" extending from the left edge and two of about 8" in and near the top margin.
This double-sheet chart from Des Barres monumental Atlantic Neptune covers the New England coast from Newbury, Massachusetts to Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  Stevens notes that this fourth state of the chart, while bearing the 1776 date, was probably issued around 1781.  Among the details added to this final state of the chart are the addition of "Isles of Sholes" and the naming of six individual islands in that group.  The chart has limited color, including greens for hachure-defined hills, light blue for rivers and ponds, and light red for the commercial centers of Newbury, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  Among the places named are Richmond Id., Black Point Bay, Stage Harb., Ogunkell (for Ogunquit) River, Cape Neddock Nubble, Garish's Point, Audience Pt., Little Boars Island and Salisbury Point.  A fairly extensive road network is depicted, as are individual dwellings.  The chart bears the "JB" watermark.  This is a wonderful example of a classic chart of the New England coast produced during the American Revolution.  Stevens 102, 4th state.  Sellers & Van Ee: 817, 3rd state.  [Item # 2280.]   $3,500.00.

(Early Magazine with New Hampshire Map.)   The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure, Vol LXVIII for 1781.   By John Hinton, at the King's Arms in Paternoster Row.   London.   1781..   378, (4).   One quarter leather over marbled boards.   Spine is worn and abraded, especially at top and bottom.   Marbled boards scuffed.   Contents very good with only occasional traces of foxing.
This volume includes the January through June, 1781 issues of The Universal Magazine plus a supplement.   Included are two outstanding maps, An Accurate Map of New Hampshire in New England from a late Survey (12 5/8 x 11") and A New and Accurate Map of the Province of Nova Scotia in North America from the latest Observations (11 1/8 x 13").   Both maps remain bound in the volume and have light offsetting.   The map of New Hampshire actually includes the present-day State of Maine as part of the "Province of New Hampshire."   A narrative description accompanies each map.   In addition, there is a full-page engraving of "George Washington, Commander in Chief of the American Army."   A four-page "Succinct Account of the Life and Voyages of Captain James Cook" is accompanied by a fold-out engraving entitled "Representation of the Death of Captain Cook."   All in all, a rich source of history as it was occuring in 1781.   Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: New Hampshire - 374, Nova Scotia - 375.   [Item # 2240.]   SOLD.

(Sotzmann.)   New Hampshire.   1796.   Carl Ernst Bohn.   Hamburg.   26.5 x 17.75."   Original hand color.  Light to moderate staining along centerfold.  Unobtrusive small repair at left centerfold.
New Hampshire was one of the ten maps completed for Christoph Ebeling's planned atlas of the United States.  The German project faltered and the individual maps are quite scarce.  The state maps that were completed were among the best available at the time in terms of scale and level of detail.  The New Hampshire map provides excellent topographical and political detail, including land holdings of several individuals.  Dartmouth College is located and there is the first reference to Mount Washington on a printed map.   Cobb, Maps of New Hampshire to 1900:  75.   [Item No. 2162.]  SOLD.      Click here for images.

(Denison.)   A Map of the States of New Hampshire and Vermont By J. Denison.   1796.   From Morse's The American Universal Geography.   (Boston.)   7 1/2 x 9 1/8."   One dime-sized spot of light staining; map may have been cleaned.
A nice early map of New Hampshire and Vermont identifying 5 and 11 counties, respectively.  Many towns are located.  "Line of Mason's Patent 1787" extends northeastward from Rindge, New Hampshire to the unspecified Maine border.   Wheat & Brun: 188.   Cobb, Maps of  New Hampshire to 1900:  74.   Cobb, Vermont Maps Prior to 1900: 121.    [Item No. 2058.]  SOLD.

(Carey.)   The State of New Hampshire, By Saml. Lewis.   1801.   Engraved for M. Carey.   Philadelphia.   7 9/16 x 5 3/4."   Staining, particularly in the margins.
An attractive, small map of New Hampshire from the very beginning of the nineteenth century.  It was published in Mathew Carey's American Pocket Atlas.   On the map the northern border of New Hampshire  is imprecisely suggested by a row of mountains.   Wheat & Brun: 187, State II.   [Item No. 2094.]   $140.00.

(Belknap.)   A New Map of New Hampshire by Jeremy Belknap.  1791.   1812 or 1813.   Boston or Dover (NH)   14 3/4 x 10 3/4."   Professionally cleaned; 4" tear expertly mended.
This map originally appeared in the 1791 edition of  Belknap's "History of New Hampshire" in 1791.  This version, slightly modified, appeared in either the 1812 or 1813 republications of the work.   Wheat & Brun 183, State II.   Cobb, Maps of New Hampshire to 1900: 65.    [Item No. 2028.]   SOLD.

(Blunt.)   Plan of Portsmouth Harbour.   1815.   From Blunt's American Coast Pilot.   New York.   4 1/8 x 7."   Light soiling/foxing, but a good strong impression.
An attractive, small map of the Portsmouth/Kittery area with considerable detail.  Among the features identified are Boyds Millpond, Pumpkin Is., Seavy's I., Rising Castle, Spruce Creek, Braveboat Harbour, West Sister ("Very dangerous"), as well as the towns of Portsmouth, Newcastle and Kittery.  The chart features a compass rose, a small rendering of a ship and numerous soundings.    [Item No. 2138.]   $100.00.

(New Hampshire -- White Mountains)   Routes to the White Ms. and Winnipiscogee L. Showing also the Atlantic and St. Lawrence R.R. &c.   1848.   W. Williams.   New York.   7 1/8 x 5.0."   Uniformly age-toned; one tear of less than one-half inch in lower right margin.  Very good.
This rarely-seen small map of western Maine and eastern New Hampshire apparently appeared in a guide book or railroad schedule.  In addition to the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad, the map identifies the B&M; the Portsmouth, Saco and Portland Railroad; and the Kennebeck, Bath and Portland Railroad.  Mt. Washington, Sebago Lake and Saddleback Mountain are located as well as numerous towns and rivers.  Not in Cobb's New Hampshire Maps to 1900.    [Item No. 2092.]   $250.00.
