Maps of New York
(View -- Montanus.) Novum Amsterodamum. 1671. Montanus. Amsterdam. Image size: 5 x 6 1/2." Page size: 12 1/4 x 8." Clean, sharp example. Copperplate engraving is at the top of a page followed by German text.
One of the earliest available views of New York City, depicting a church, signal tower and windmill. The view closely resembles item B-1, a sketch dated 1642-43, in Stokes and Haskell's "American Historical Prints -- Early Views of American Cities, Etc." [Item no. 2231.] $1,000.00(Gentleman's Magazine.) Plan of Fort Frederick at Crown Point [on sheet with] Untitled map of Lake George/Lake Champlain area.] 1755. From the November, 1755 Gentleman's Magazine. (London.) Page size: 8 1/8 x 5." Removed from a volume. Some show-through of print from verso, otherwise very good.
The top half of this page from the November, 1755 issue of the Gentleman's Magazine is a plan of Fort Frederick at Crown Point. The lower right quarter of the page is devoted to a crude map of the area surrounding Lake George which has an A-H key identifying Lake George, the Hudson River, Lake Champlain, Fort Anne, Fort Nicholson, etc. The balance of the page presents a military description of the area to give the reader insight into "the country where the late engagement happened." Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 55. [Item no. 2212.] SOLD.(View: Town and Country Magazine.) A View of New York, Governors Island, the River &c. from Long Island. 1776. Published as the Act directs by A. Hamilton, Junr. near St. Johns Gate, Nov'r 1, 1776. (London.) 4 1/2 x 6 7/8." A very clean, strong impression. Very good.
A wonderful, small view of New York City dated 1776. While bearing that date, the view is clearly a copy of an engraving by P. Canot from about 1768 entitled "A South West View of the City of New York, in North America. Drawn on the Spot by by Capt. Thomas Howdell of the Royal Artillery." The Canot engraving item is B-85 (and Plate 18-a) in Stokes' American Historical Prints and is described as follows: "Taken from the southern slope of Mount Pitt, near the intersection of the present Henry and Montgomery Streets. The Rutgers House, seen in the foreground on the left, is the upper of the two Rutgers mansions and was built in 1754-55. The large Church at the extreme right is Trinity Church. The tall building a considerable distance to the left of Trinity is the New or Middle Dutch Church." An exceptional example of a very desirable view of New York City from the Revolutionary War era. Phillips, A List of Maps of America: p. 525. [Item No. 2109.] $750.00.(Gentleman's Magazine.) Map of Hudson's River, with the adjacent Country. 1778. From Gentleman's Magazine, January, 1778 issue. London. 11 7/8 x 8 3/8." Tissue repair to minor binding edge tear. Some very light offsetting and small stains. Revolutionary War-era map designed to familiarize the magazine's readers with the location of the hostilities in "the American War." Map depicts most of New York and New England as far west as the Connecticut River. Crown Point and Ticonderoga are at the top of the area covered, with Philadelphia at the bottom. Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 319. [Item No. 1132.] SOLD.
(North American Cities -- Millar.) Various Plans and Draughts of Cities, Towns, Harbours &c. drawn from the latest Authorities. From Millar's New Complete & Universal System of Geography. (London.) ca. 1790. 12 x 8 1/2." Attractive later hand color. Very minor foxing. Matted and shrink wrapped. Not examined prior to shrink wrapping.
A wonderfully decorative assemblage on one sheet of five small maps of the principal North American cities of the late 18th century. The five maps portray New York Harbour; the Town and Harbour of Boston; the River Delaware from Chester to Philadelphia; the Harbour of Charles Town, South Carolina; and the City and Harbour of Havanna. The "Penny Ferry" is noted just north of Boston. [Item # 2243.] $250.00.
(Weimar Geographisches Institut.) Geographisch, statistische und historische Charte von Neuyork. 1824. Im Verlage des Geographischen Instituts. Weimar. Page size, including surrounding text: 19 1/4 x 24 3/8." Very good, clean example. Color outline of counties.
This is the map of New York from the very scarce German edition of Carey & Lea's "A Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas...," first published in 1822. The map is surrounded by text (in German) describing the state, its 53 counties and principal cities. Rare. [Item No. 1131.] $500.00.(Dember.) Map of Niagara River or the Straits between the Lakes Erie and Ontario by Geo. Dember 60th Regmt. ca. 1850. Lith of R.H. Pease. Albany, NY. 8 1/4 x 17." Very faint darkening along one fold; evidence of old mount on reverse in margin at top right. Otherwise, a very good, bright example.
This is apparently a reproduction, circa 1850, of an earlier map of the Niagara River from around 1760. In addition to "The Falls," the map identifies Fort Niagara, Prudeaux's Landing July 6th, 1759, Road of the Carrying Place, Duncan's House, Navy Is., The Great Island, Meadow I., Beaver I. and The Narrows. With a scale of two miles to the inch, the map provides good detail of the course of the river. [Item No. 2093.] SOLD.(U.S. C. & G. S.) Long Island Sound from Plum Island to Falkner's Island. 1880. U. S. C. & G. S. (Washington.) 19 5/8 x 18 1/8. Folded as issued. Very light offsetting and extremely light fold darkening. Pinhole at lower left neat line intersection. Overall, a very nice example.
A wonderful chart of part of the eastern end of Long Island. The 1:80,000 scale of this chart means much detail is captured, right down to individual dwellings being represented. Among the numerous features identified on Long Island are Great and Little Peconic Bays, Cutchogue Harbor, Noyack Bay, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Orient and Oyster Ponds. A portion of the Connecticut shore appears at the top of the chart and includes the towns of Clinton, Westbrook and Saybrook, as well as numerous islands, points and reefs. [Item No. 2047.] SOLD.
