Maps of Rhode Island

(London Magazine.)   A Map of the Colony of Rhode Island: with the adjacent Parts of Connecticut, Massachusets Bay, &c...   1778.    From the London Magazine, November, 1778 issue.   London.    7 1/4 x 9 1/2."    Folded as issued. Lightly age-toned.  A strong impression with occasional very light offsetting.
An early, if not the first, map to focus on the colony of Rhode Island.  Considerable portions of both Massachusetts and Connecticut also are shown.  Some detail of roads is provided; the road shown on Cape Cod ends at Sandwich.  Block Island,  Martha's Vineyard,  Nantucket and the eastern end of Long Island are included.   Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 325.   Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies, 1750-1789:  825.   [Item No. 2172.]    SOLD.

(Reid.)   the State of Rhode Island, from the Latest Surveys. 1796.   1796.   Engraved for the American Edition of Winterbotham's America, Published by John Reid, N.York.   New York.   16 7/8 x 12 7/8."   Light fold browning and scattered light foxing; strong impression.
A very nice example of one of the earliest American-published maps of Rhode Island, printed in 1796.  Two earlier American maps of Rhode Island were published in the previous year and one other was also published in 1796.  The map depicts roads as well as town and county boundaries.  Quicksand Pond is shown entirely in Massachusetts.     Wheat & Brun: 254.    [Item No. 2145.]   SOLD.

(Blunt.)   Plan of Newport Harbour.   1815.   From Blunt's American Coast Pilot.   New York.   7 3/8 x 3 7/8."   Lightly soiled with light waterstaining in right margin.  A strong impression.
A nice small chart of Newport Harbor from the 1815 edition of Blunt's American Coast Pilot.  The chart features a compass rose, a small rendering of a ship and soundings in the harbor.  The layout of a portion of the town of Newport is depicted.  Among the places and geographic features identified are Connanicut Island, Coddington Point, Coasters Harbour I., Fort Wolcott, Fort Adams, Prices Neck, Castle Hill and Beavertail Point.    [Item No. 2139.]   $100.00.

(Brown & Parsons.)   Map of Massachusetts Connecticut and Rhode Island from the latest Authorities...1838.   1838.   Published by Brown & Parsons.   Hartford.   Map dimensions are 15 x 20."  Folds into a case of 5 1/4 x 3 1/4."   This attractively colored map folds into a green leather folder.  Folder, embossed with "Massachusetts Connecticut & Rhode Island," is scuffed and worn.  Map has four quarter-sized spots, perhaps old ink.  There are two fold separations of about 1" each, one of which has been mended with archival tape.
In addition to the three states, this uncommon map encompasses eastern New York state including Long Island.  The counties of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island are colored.  Scarce.    [Item No. 2095.]  $400.00.

(U. S. Coast Survey.)  Narragansett Bay From a Trigonometrical Survey under the direction of Benjamin Pierce, Superintendent of the Survey of the Coast of the United States...1873.  U.S. Coast Survey.  (NP)  1873.  Image size: 45 1/2 x 30."  Excellent impression on heavy chart paper; rolled, never folded.  Spot of about 1/2" diameter in title area; occasional light soiling otherwise.  Chipping to edges well away from neat lines.  Overall, a very nice example.

An exquisitely detailed chart of Narragansett Bay, from Providence in the north to Newport in the south, and from Fall River in the east to East Greenwich in the west.  A myriad of features are named, including rocks, points, beaches, lights, etc. S treet grids are shown for the cities and towns, while individual building and lot boundaries are shown for other areas.  Numerous soundings are provided, as are many notations such as "oyster beds" just south of Providence.  A chart detailing the location and signals of 14 lighthouses is also presented.  A wonderful chart in superior condition.  [Item # 2279]   $600.00.
