This map, as well as the virtually identical Blaeu map that first appeared ca. 1638, are based upon the Mercator/Hondius map of the same area from 1606.  Both the Blaeu and Jansson maps made additions to the Mercator/Hondius mapping, making these the most accurate maps of the Southeast yet to appear.  Among the improvements are a much more accurate portrayal of Chesapeake Bay and the apparent first appearence of Newport News ("Newport nesa") on a printed map.  Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps: 42.  Burden, The Mapping of North America: 254.  [Item # 2286.]   $1,750.00.

This chart -- from Cape Charles to Cape Henry --  is illustrated in Guthorn's  United States Coastal Charts 1783-1861 (page 88).  Guthorn notes "This chart was a preliminary exploration of the two main channels the Bay, and the migrating shoals between.  Sailing directions, locations,  abbreviations, compass variation, and tides are in the accompanying notes."    [Item No. 2170.]   $125.00.
