Maps of Vermont

(Gordon)   New Hampshire, Vermont, &c.   1788.   London.   14 1/4 x 13 3/8."   Moderate fold browning; pinholes at two fold intersections; 1/4" separation at another fold intersection; close at left neat line, as published.
This map of northern New England appeared in William Gordon's "History of the Rise Progress and Establishment of the Independence of the United States of America," published in 1788.  It extends from Quebec (City) and Montreal in the north to Albany and Boston in the south.  The Maine coast is shown as far north as Penobscot Bay.   Many town and county designations appear.  Among the interesting notations on the map are one mentioning that "the Hampshire White Hills" are visible many leagues off at sea and another: "The Indians report that Connecticut River and a branch of Sagadehoc are so near that there is but a short carrying place between them."    Cobb, NH: 63.  Cobb, VT: 62.    [Item No. 2034.]   $450.00.

(Scott.)   State of Vermont Drawn and Engraved.   1795.   From Scott's The United States Gazetteer...   Philadelphia.   7.5 x 6.25."   Very good condition with top margin raggedness above neat line and close at left neat line.  A good, strong image; light fold lines; very faint foxing (these maps often are heavily foxed).
Scott's The United States Gazetteer  was one of the earliest atlases printed in the U.S. to include maps of the individual states.  This early map of Vermont notes seven counties.  Dartmouth College is named and located with a very small rendition of a College building.  Governor Chittenden's residence is also indicated by a small building.   Wheat & Brun 196.  Cobb, Vermont 116.    [Item No. 2088.]   $200.00.
