An attractive small map of the islands of Cuba and Jamaica designed to illustrate Columbus' first voyage. Considerable coastal detail is provided for Cuba. The southern tip of Florida appears at the top left of the map. A cartouche of Columbus and cherubs decorates the lower left corner. [Item No. 2164.] $450.00.(Seller and Price.) This is the first Morse map of the West Indies and one of the four first maps of those islands published in America. It portrays the Gulf Coast (which consists of East Florida, West Florida, Louisiana and New Mexico), Central America ("Mexico or New Spain"), the northern edge of South America ("Terra Firma") and the Caribbean Islands. Two complete vertical separations and several small tears have been professionally mended. Insect specking and minor soiling. Still, a good copy.
A magnificent and extremely scarce chart of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Six insets including the harbors of San Juan, St. Thomas, Road Harbour and Christiansted. Also four approach views. Includes an interesting "Precautionary Notice respecting the positions of the Virgin Islands," noting the uncertainty of the positions of the Islands and warning that "(a) great number of wrecks have occurred on Anegada Reefs..." All four edges are trimmed with a contemporary patterned fabric adding a distinctive flair to a wonderful chart. [Item No. 2038.] SOLD.
